Building on the skills we gained in our previous subject on controlling plant pests, diseases, and disorders, this unit—AHCPCM305 Implement a Plant Nutrition Program—dives into what plants need to grow well and how we can support them. We’re learning how to assess a site, check soil and growing media, recognise nutrient deficiencies, and choose the right fertilisers for different plant species. We also look at how to safely prepare and apply these products while keeping environmental impacts in mind.

In short, we’re developing the skills to diagnose plant nutrition issues and put together a practical nutrition plan from start to finish. Phew—there’s a lot to learn, but it’s incredibly rewarding!
This week’s practical was held at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, where we explored real‑world examples of plant nutrition challenges across a huge variety of species. It was fantastic to have access to such a world‑class learning environment just a short walk from campus. Seeing firsthand the diversity of plants that thrive in the Adelaide region was inspiring—giving us a glimpse of what’s possible in our own gardens.
A great reminder of why we’re studying horticulture in the first place!
