Learning the Art (and Science!) of Lawn Care

This week I kicked off a subject my husband is very excited for me to study — AHCTRF309 Implement a Grassed Area Maintenance Program. What I thought would be a simple “mow the lawn” unit has turned out to be a deep dive into the real science of turf care.  From understanding how different soil types and climates determine turf selection, to learning how to maintain grass health year-round, I’m beginning to appreciate the many conversations my husband and I have had about the state of our own lawn. Let’s just say…I can definitely see top-soiling in my future!

Getting Hands-On

Our practical session this week was full of action as we got comfortable using a range of turf maintenance equipment — the lawn mower, line trimmer, blower, and even the coring machine. (I’ll admit, that corer was a lot harder to steer than I expected!)

With more rain forecast, the soil at The Priory will be beautifully primed for the next steps in our program — fertilising, top-soiling, and seeding. I’m looking forward to seeing how all the theory and practical work come together over the coming weeks.
