It was hard to believe it was the first official day of summer during our second practical for Implement a Grassed Area Maintenance Program—a cool morning with a light sprinkle of rain. At least the weather ensured the soil was perfectly prepped for the work ahead!
We kicked off with an intense hands-on session in manual weeding, really getting to know the site before moving on to the bigger jobs. Once the area was clear, we cored, fertilised, top-soiled, seeded, and watered the plot thoroughly. With all that effort, I’m excited to watch a fresh patch of green begin to emerge over the next few weeks.
What surprised me most was just how much science and strategy goes into achieving a healthy, immaculate lawn. From soil structure to nutrient balance to choosing the right turf variety, every decision influences the final outcome. It definitely made me appreciate lawn care in a whole new way—and inspired me to take more pride in my own backyard!
In fact, after all this new knowledge and confidence, my husband even encouraged me to mow the lawn unsupervised this week… a true endorsement of the skills I’m learning at Ironwood!
