Hands-On with Machinery: A Double Dose of Practical Learning

Starting the Year with Real-World Experience

The new year kicked off with intense summer heat, delaying our practical sessions until the second week. This gave us a double dose of hands-on learning—and what an experience it was!

Netting the Vineyard at the Australian Wine Centre

On Monday, we had the privilege of assisting with netting the vineyard at the Australian Wine Centre. This stunning location gave us a real sense of being part of the wine industry. Seeing the effort that goes into protecting the vines offered valuable insight into the hard work behind producing some of my favourite drops.

Mastering the Water Pump at St Laurence’s Priory

Our second practical day took us back to St Laurence’s Priory, which had also felt the impact of last week’s heatwave. I was particularly excited to learn how to operate a larger water pump—much bigger and more complex than the domestic one I use at home. Its impressive output and the troubleshooting involved gave us a taste of real-world problem-solving when working with equipment.

Bringing the Garden Back to Life

Since we hadn’t visited the Priory for a month, there was plenty of garden maintenance to tackle. We put the lawn mower, line trimmer, and blower to good use, restoring the grounds to their tidy, beautiful state. Regular upkeep truly makes a difference in showcasing the garden’s charm.
