There are three different types of subsidised training available for students at Ironwood –Job Trainer, Work Ready, and Traineeships. The availability of each program is dependent on meeting the eligibility requirements and if the course is listed in the Subsidised Training List. Please find further details about each option below:
Subsidised Training
The South Australian Government is putting money into developing skills across a number of growing industries to supercharge our economy including horticulture and marketing.
Subsidised Training eligibility
You may be eligible for government subsidised training based on your employment and training level. You may be eligible for subsidised training if you live or work in South Australia, and you are:
- an Australian or New Zealand citizen
- a permanent Australian resident, or
- an eligible visa holder
and are:
- 16 years or over and not enrolled at school, or
- 16 years or over, enrolled in school and undertaking training through the Training Guarantee for SACE Students (TGSS), or
- undertaking training through a training contract as an apprentice or trainee in an identified course

How to apply
1. Choose Your Course
Once you have decided to apply for a qualification, check you meet:
- Minimum Age Requirement (18 years)
- Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) requirements
- the holder of an eligible visa
All students intending to use subsidised funding will be required to demonstrate satisfactory language, literacy, and numeracy skills (LLN) as part of their enrolment. This is completed at our Adelaide office.

2. Prepare Your Application
Complete the online enrolment form, and upload details of:
- Colour copy of Passport or Driver’s Licence. (Proof of ID+ residency)– If a passport is provided please provide a copy of a bank statement or utility bill issued within the last 6 months showing your current residential address.
- Colour copy of either: current green Medicare card; Birth Certificate; current Australian passport; current New Zealand passport; or Australian citizenship certificate. (Proof of citizenship)
- Colour copy of Certificates and Statement Results for any previously attained or partially completed qualifications completed in or recognised in Australia.
3. Process of Your Application
Your enrolment will be assessed on the information you have provided. Upon receiving all paperwork and supporting evidence a formal assessment of your eligibility for government funding and suitability for the qualification is conducted. You will be notified by an admissions officer of the status of this application once your eligibility has been assessed.
Our Admissions team will contact you to arrange a time to complete the LLN assessment at our Adelaide office.
Before you book your appointment, it is important that you provide all the above-required documents. Without these, we are unable to process your application.
Please note that we are unable to finalise your enrolment until all required information and supporting evidence have been provided.
4. Letter of Offer
Ironwood assesses the enrolment application. When deemed a successful enrolment application, the student will be issued a Letter of Offer to study with Ironwood. The student reads and accepts the conditions outlined in the Letter of Offer. Student fees are finalised – payment established.
5. Confirm Your Enrolment
If your enrolment application is accepted, you will receive a welcome email with a Confirmation of Enrolment attached, confirming acceptance into the qualification. It is important to check your junk or spam folder as this email can end up here sometimes. If not received, please contact our enrolments team on 08 8227 0300 during business hours. Your Trainer Assessor will contact you to undertake an induction and commence the learning program.
Please note that while Ironwood Institute makes every opportunity to support each student throughout their study to achieve their qualification, successful completion of the qualification and employment outcomes are the responsibility of the student.
Traineeships
Ironwood Institute courses that are eligible for Traineeships are
- AHC30722 Certificate III in Horticulture
- AHC31120 Certificate III in Nursery Operations
- AHC33722 Certificate III in Protected Horticulture
- AHC50422 Diploma of Horticulture Management

Important Information
- Delivery: Blended – Online/Workbook + Classroom (Rundle Mall Campus) + Workplace
- Duration: 2 years for F/T employees and 3 years for P/T employees

How to apply
1. Find an Employer
Before entering into an apprenticeship, the student must find an employer willing to take them on as a trainee or apprentice. You and your employer will need to sign a formal training contract. You can find an employer by:
- Search job websites such as seek.com and newspaper advertisements
- Talk to employers in your local area
- Asking your friends, family, and others in your community about what might be available talk to an Apprenticeship Network Provider as they may be able to link you with potential employers
2. Commence Employment
Once the student commences employment, you will need to fill out a trainee/sign up the request form and return it to admission@ironwood.edu.au
3. Choose an Apprenticeship Network Provider
Your Apprenticeship Network Provider will help you sign a training contract with your employer. They will work with you and your employer to identify the training and support you need. The training contract may commence on the same day that employment commences or may commence at a later date.
4. Commence Training
As part of your traineeship, you will undertake a nationally recognised qualification with Ironwood who will provide the training for the Australian Trainee.
All students intending to use Government funding will be required to demonstrate satisfactory language, literacy, and numeracy skills (LLN) before enrolment.
Incentives are available for both the employer and apprentice
Trainee: Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment
The Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment (AATSP) provides up to a maximum of two years of direct financial support to eligible Australian Apprentices (AAs) commencing an Australian Apprenticeship in priority occupations experiencing national skills shortage. A full-time AA may claim up to a maximum of $5,000 over a two-year period and a part-time AA up to $2,500.

Employer: Priority Wage Incentive
The Priority Wage Subsidy (PWS) aims to encourage Apprenticeship commencement levels and improve retention and completion rates in priority occupations experiencing national skills shortage by helping employers offset the cost of taking on an Apprentice. Employers with apprentices undertaking the following courses are eligible for this incentive:
- AHC30722 Certificate III in Horticulture
- AHC31120 Certificate III in Nursery Operations
- AHC33722 Certificate III in Protected Horticulture
- AHC50422 Diploma of Horticulture Management
Eligible employers who commence a new or existing employee as a trainee in these courses can claim a wage subsidy:
- up to 10% of gross wages paid for the first and second years of a Training Contract (to a maximum of $1,500 per quarter/$6,000 year)
- Example: trainee annual salary of $50,000 would receive $10,000 wage subsidy over two years ( $1250 per quarter).
- 5% of gross wages paid for the third year (to a maximum of $750 per quarter).
