Digging Even Deeper: Discovering Plant Nutrition Across the Parklands

Our plant nutrition studies continued with a visit to Veale Gardens in the Adelaide Parklands, giving us another fantastic opportunity to see how real‑world conditions shape plant health. What surprised me most was how different the nutrient issues were compared to what we saw at the Botanic Gardens. Instead of the manganese deficiencies I spotted last week, this area showed much clearer signs of nitrogen deficiency—a great reminder that even within the Adelaide City Council area, soil conditions can vary dramatically.

Back at the St Laurences practical site, we put our growing knowledge into practice with hands‑on soil analysis to pinpoint plant nutrition needs. From there, we moved into the practical application of fertilisers, giving us the chance to quite literally feed the plants ourselves. It’s one thing to talk about nutrient inputs in class—it’s a whole other thing to mix, measure, and apply them with your own hands.

I’m really looking forward to observing how these plants respond in the coming weeks. With the addition of fertilisers, compost, and mulch, we’re expecting to see some real improvements in plant health.

My green thumb seems to be getting greener every week, and I’m loving every moment of it! 🌿✨
