A Change of Plans – Learning from Nature, Rain or Shine

This week, our class had planned to visit Fremont Park in Adelaide to see firsthand how the invasive fungus Phytophthora is being managed. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas! With thunder, lightning, and even hail on the forecast, the visit was cancelled — safety first!

Phytophthora, a destructive fungus-like organism, has been detected in some trees at the park. It poses a serious threat to trees and native vegetation. The City of Playford has wisely taken preventative steps by closing off small sections of the park to the public, as walkers can unknowingly spread contaminated soil on their shoes. Thankfully, while harmful to plants, Phytophthora is harmless to humans and animals.

With my latest assignment now submitted, I’m looking forward to our next subject — AHCMOM315 Operate Chemical Application Machinery and Equipment — where we’ll get hands-on experience using new horticultural tools.

And on a brighter note, what a spectacular season it’s been for roses! My horticulture studies have truly paid off, resulting in my best garden display yet. Here’s a bouquet from my garden — especially for Kay! 🌹
